USD 460 Hesston Schools

City of Hesston

Hesston College

All Youth Sports are open to Hesston USD 460 residents.  Out of district enrollments are accepted, space permitting.  Our Sports programs each have an early and late deadline.  There is a late fee added to registrations coming in after the early deadline.

Youth sports are meant to teach fundamentals of the game, sportsmanship, and fair play.  Along the way, we hope all participants have fun and make some new friends.

Flag Football

Our Flag Football program is for all 3rd through 6th grade students.  Practices will cover legal plays and techniques.  Rules are in place to insure against rough play and other unfair advantages.  Information is passed out through the Elementary School (mailed to 5th and 6th graders) in late February with a mid-March deadline.  Coaches are needed for this program, so parents or other interested persons are encouraged to contact HRCE when their child brings home the registration information.

Junior Tennis

HRCE administers a Junior Tennis program during the summer.  The Program Director is Mark Dahlsten, Head Coach, HHS Tennis Teams.  The program is USTA affiliated and offers 2 weeks of group lessons.  These are followed by six play days where participants are grouped according to skills and play games.  Coach Dahlsten also offers a Novice tournament for those interested.  It is usually held right after the Junior Tennis program ends.  Discounts are available for multiple children from the same family that sign up.  Deadline for registration is May 22, 2009.

Junior Golf

One of our most popular summer programs is Junior Golf.  Bob Beitler is our Director.  Youth may sign up for a series of group lessons and choose from three different membership options.  A choice is made (generally based on age and skill) to determine which flight each youngster is placed in: 3-hole, 6-hole, 9-hole, and 18-hole.  Parents are encouraged to sign up to be a group walker on one of the play days with the 3,6, and 9-hole divisions.  The Junior Golf brochure is mailed to all of last year’s participants and they are available in our office anytime after April 1.  The deadline for return of registration form and fees is May 15, 2009.

Youth Basketball League

3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th Grades

There will be a recreational basketball league for 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade girls and boys starting in December.  We will be playing teams from surrounding towns on Saturdays.

If youngsters want to play, they should sign up when the HRCE enrollment envelopes are handed out by Elementary School teachers at school in late September.  Enrollment envelopes are mailed to 5th and 6th graders.   There will be a fee of $15.00 for participation in this league.

MS Summer Basketball League

Hesston Recreation operates a summer basketball league for Middle School teams.  We have both 8th grade and 7th grade divisions for both boys and girls.  We offer a structured league that plays a 7 game round-robin schedule in both girls and boys divisions for a fair price that includes certified officials and provided scorekeeping.  Information for the 2008 season will be mailed to all MS basketball coaches in a 45-mile radius of Hesston at the end of March 2009.

Baseball/Softball

Our baseball and softball teams are part of the MKL League, a league that includes 9 area towns.  Leagues for boys and girls from Pre-K through 8th grade are formed in April.  There are opportunities for youth to play Bantam Tee Ball (Pre-K & K-Hesston only), Midget Tee Ball (1st-2nd grades), Rookie Leagues (3rd-4th grades), Pony League (5th-6th grades) and Kansas Girls fast pitch (7th-8th grades).  Boys and girls will be separate in Midget, Rookie and Pony Leagues.  These 3 leagues play both home and away games.

Registration envelopes/letters will be distributed through the Elementary School (mailed to 5th and 6th graders) in mid-March.  Please get the form and fee back to HRCE by the deadline.  Late registrations cause the number of players on each team to grow.  HRCE has instituted a late registration policy to keep team size from becoming too large.  Your assistance will make the playing experience better for all.

Youth Outdoor Soccer

This Fall program is open to all 1st through 6th grade youth.  Divisions are as follows:  Junior (1st-2nd grades); Intermediate (3rd-4th grades); Senior (5th-6th grades).  Girls and Boys play separately in each of these divisions, as long as there are enough signed up.

Registration information is mailed with the District enrollment packets and is available on Enrollment day and in the HRCE Office.

j0262555Pee Wee Track Meet

This program introduces 1st through 6th grade children to the sport of Track and Field.  Each participant can choose up to 3 total events, with a maximum of 2 field events or 2 running events as part of the 3 total.  Participants each receive a ribbon and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each event receive a ribbon.  The 2009 meet will be held on April 27 and is run off with the assistance of the Hesston High School and Middle School track teams.  Information is distributed to the Elementary and Middle Schools in late March.  Pre-registration is required for this free event.

j0399446Indoor Soccer

This youth sports program is faster and higher-scoring, plus it’s inside and won’t get cancelled because of rainy weather!  Divisions will be offered for 1st/2nd grades, 3rd/4th grades and 5th/6th grades this year.  We want to have both Boys and Girls divisions, and with good support from your youth and parents, want to make this a fun experience for everyone involved.

The game schedule will include five or six games to be played in either the HS Auxiliary Gym or CAC on the Hesston College campus

Sign-up information will be distributed through the Elementary School (mailed to 5th and 6th gradres) as we do other sports programs.  Early deadline and late deadlines will be in January.

Adult Programs

Men’s Softball

Hesston Recreation organizes and runs a men’s softball league that begins in late May-early June and goes until the League tournament in late July.  Games are placed at the City Diamond on Wednesday and Friday evenings.  Our league follows USSSA rules, but is not a USSSA-sanctioned league.  Organization of the league happens in late April and early May with the manager’s meeting.  Schedules are developed and play started around the end of May.  Deadline for team registration is late April.
